5 Things I’m Thankful For As A Special Needs Parent

As a parent of two children with special needs, I have faced many challenges and obstacles. However, amidst the difficulties, I have learned to appreciate the many blessings that come with this journey. In this article, I will share with you five of the most significant things that I am grateful for. These are the things that bring light to my darkest days and remind me of the beauty and strength that can be found in the midst of adversity.

  1. My Children’s Resilience
One thing that I am most grateful for is their resilience. Despite the challenges that they face, they keep pushing forward, and their determination never ceases to amaze me. I am proud of them for always trying their best, even when things are tough.
  2. Increased Empathy
Being a special needs parent has also taught me a lot about empathy. I have learned to put myself in my children’s shoes and understand the challenges they face every day. This has helped me become more patient, understanding, and compassionate toward others who are going through difficult times.
  3. Appreciation of Small Wins
As a special needs parent, I have learned to appreciate the small wins in life. Whether it’s a new word that my children have learned, a successful therapy session, or simply a moment of joy, I have learned to cherish these moments and celebrate them. It’s important to focus on the positives and remember that progress, no matter how small, is still progress.
  4. Growth and Learning
Being a special needs parent has allowed me to grow and learn. I have learned so much about my children, myself, and the world around me. I have gained new skills and knowledge that I would never have otherwise. Being a special needs parent has challenged me in ways I never could have imagined, but it has also been a rewarding and fulfilling experience.
  5. Strength
There are days when I feel like the weight of the world is on my shoulders. However, it’s through these struggles that I learn to become stronger and more resilient. Being a special needs parent requires a unique kind of strength, but it’s a strength that we all possess and one that we can draw upon when we need it the most.

While being a special needs parent can be difficult, there is still so much to be thankful for. As I continue to navigate this path, I will continue to be grateful for all the blessings that come with it.

If you are struggling as a special needs mom, a book that I have enjoyed reading is “The Other Side of Special: Navigating the Messy, Emotional, Joy-Filled Life of a Special Needs Mom“. In the book, the authors discuss finding joy, comfort, and hope in difficult times. I will attach a link to the title so you can take a look.
